WHITTIER — Close to 500 local middle and high school students who completed a challenging six-week summer math academy inspired by famous educator Jaime Escalante celebrated the milestone during a ceremony with friends and family on July 14 at Pioneer High School. Each student was recognized with certificates for successfully completing the 26th annual Escalante Summer Math Academy. Individual classes also posed in front of bleachers filled with smartphone-toting family members.
The seventh- through 12th-grade students who received A’s or B’s have earned 10 credits that will be added to their transcripts, enabling them to advance one course level. “Students from all five high schools and all six middle schools came together at the Escalante Academy for a common purpose, which is to excel together,” said Javier Gonzalez, math department chair and director of the summer academy. “The sacrifice they’ve made this summer is not in vain even if they didn’t pass because they’ll be prepared for the school year.” Held in June and July, Pioneer’s math academy, named after the former Garfield High School math educator who died in 2010, offered classes in Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry and Math Analysis and one calculus workshop to students from Whittier Union’s five comprehensive high schools and a few local private schools. Seventh- and eighth-graders were able to take Algebra I. The program compresses a math class that is normally taught over an entire school year into 150 hours. “In the end, it’s going to help my future and career,” said Diego Zorrilla, who will be a senior at Pioneer High School this fall and wants to major in international business management. He expects that he will have a better shot at getting into a top college after going through the summer math academy.
“I know that if I do this class I’m going to be able to push ahead and be on top of my peers,” he said. Garfield High School Assistant Principal and master of ceremonies J. (Photo by Mario Villegas) The 1988 film “Stand and Deliver” made Escalante famous by depicting his career teaching math to students at Garfield High in East Los Angeles. Gonzalez was mentored by Escalante while both taught at East Los Angeles College, where a separate Jaime Escalante Math Program exists. Gonzalez developed the math academy at Pioneer to give students a jumpstart in mathematics and inspire them to take college-level classes while in high school.

ELAC sponsored 10 classes and Pioneer High sponsored five classes. Local math teachers, 13 college students and 40 advanced high school students tutored students at this year’s academy. “I see math like a life problem,” said Jennifer Siciliano, another senior at Pioneer High who completed the academy’s calculus class.

Jaime Escalante developed a relationship with East Los Angeles College. He realized that he did not have enough time during school hours to teach the students everything they needed to know for the Advance Placement exams. He began to teach summer school at Garfield however he eventually lost the ability to teach during the summer.
It was at this point that Escalante asked the college to help him. The college was pleased to help Escalante and its community. Not only did the partnership with the college help Escalante by providing a flexible schedule and classrooms but it also helped the program grow. The Escalante Math Program is an intensive approach to pre-collegiate mathematic instruction whose comprehensive mission is to prepare inner city disadvantaged youths (primarily Latinos) to enter and succeed in mathematics-based college and university programs leading to careers in fields related to math, while simultaneously improving the quality of math instruction at inner city elementary, middle and high schools.
Our program offers a variety of courses. Using the California standards we offer courses ranging from Pre-Algebra to Trig Math Analysis. However, when we work with special programs or schools we adjust to their needs and create classes designed to address the needs of their students. The program is open to everyone. The only requirement is completion of the 6th grade before entering the program. Enrollment is done via drawing.
Signups are in January. We ask that the parents support their children by making sure they get to class on time, get their homework done everyday, and encourage them to ask for help.
This article describes the Jaime Escalante Math Program, a system that in 1989 helped an East Los Angeles high school set a record by administering over 450 Advanced Placement exams, having administered only 10 tests in 1978. The article is presented in three sections. The first section describes the program, discussing origins and backgrounds: student recruitment, the curriculum, scheduling, textbooks used, past graduates as models of achievement, community resources recruitment, and teaching methods.
The second section describes the fundamental principles of the Escalante Math Program. Ideas discussed include student, teacher, and parent accountability, hard work, teacher expectation, love for the students, parental involvement, mutual respect, proper nutrition, and preventing drug use. The final section, on psychology and the schools, proposes that teachers who encourage, discipline, and motivate their students can gain their willingness to work and help the students overcome the obstacles to getting an education that inner-city students face.
The conclusion describes a vision of mathematics education program of hard work combined with love, humor, and a recognition of 'ganas,' the desire to learn and ability to sacrifice that young people have, that will provide an educational pipeline taking students from kindergarten through to college completion.
